Comments on Eton FRX5-BTI received this last week. I believe that electronically, this unit works fine. However, ergonomically, it leaves much to be desired. Here are my issues with this design.1) The manual. It is written in a very tiny format with extremely small lettering in light grey on a white background. Virtually impossible to read. I downloaded the same manual in PDF format and printed it full size on standard letter paper which allowed it to be printed in Black on White, which improved it somewhat. However the notations on some of the diagrams are still hard to read. This is particularly true of the Top Button legends.2) The unit itself has issues with the particular font for labeling. This is a very small, compact, “designer font” in tight italics. It is small, it is difficult to read, especially (again) with the Top Button labels. These are under the top handle, in the dark, and even though back lit, they are extremely difficult to read under good ambient light conditions. In an emergency, or in the dark, it would be almost impossible. Also, the “VOLUME” and “TUNING” labels are grey on grey, again very difficult to read. The overall rey and black design looks "heavy duty", but visibility should have been taken into account. As I said, technically this is a good unit, but it fails on USABILITY, especially when this is targeted for EMERGENCY use. I would say that sadly Eton allowed Function to follow Form, rather the inverse.I expect I will keep the unit, but I will use a Dymo labeler to re-label as needed.Note the photos, which only look passable as I zoomed in with my camera.
