But at 35 dollars it was a good catch for sure; so I did get it. And I must say that both the toy and the game are really good!
Now, keep in mind that this is exclusive to the switch; which if you are a starfox fan, it is a great thing. The difference between the switch version and the others is just the Starfox character and ship; you still get the other main protagonist character and the same 2 weapons. The Xbox and PS4 versions has 1 extra physical weapon instead of the fox character, but in the switch version you get it as digital item.
Now let's address the main issue here: either you spend 80 dollars for the complete digital version, or 300 dollars for ALL the characters and ship as physical release. This is up to you. IF you see value in the toys (which look and feel quality made; not like cheap 3d printed ships), then go ahead and spend 300 dollars to get all the content. While if you don't care about the toys, just buy the complete version as digital.
You don't need neither the toys nor the weapons or characters to play the game, so it is up to you which way to go. I did buy the physical version of the starter pack and an extra ship and an extra set of weapons as digital, and that is enough for me.
Keep in mind that you WON'T GET ANY SHIP OR OTHER UNLOCK IN GAME; so either you get them digitally from the store, or you buy the toys.
When you play you can choose if you want to play digitally; so without that contraption where you put your controllers, pilot and ship on it; or digitally. Although keep in mind that if you don't buy items digitally, they will stay on your account for a week or so; then if you want to use again one of the physical ships you bought, you have to use again the contraption controller, plug on it the ship and pilot and you are good to go. This is annoying but make sense, otherwise everyone would go out there and loan their ships and pilots and they would be permanently unlocked. Some say it is greedy; I think it is fair.
Another thing that is nice is that in TV mode you can play split screen with another person locally; this is a great feature that I wish more games would use. There is no online co-op, from what I can tell, this is mostly a single player game.
So; about the game....many say that it looks like no man sky; but in reality; the game is more similar to Everspace, minus the fact that you can't pilot the ship in first person view.
It is fundamentally a space shooter game; you fly around, fight against pirates, go down to a planet, and the control switch to "hover"; so you can hover on the surface instead of flying. And basically you play a hover version of a generic shooter game; which is refreshing to be honest, after the likes of fortnite, call of duty and similar. You can't get out of your ship, but the ship feels like a 3rd person game shooter; so you may like it or not.
Being a Ubisoft game, there is plenty to do; each planet require you to have a certain level; you free areas, improve your ship, improve the facilities on the ground and repel invaders; nothing new, but it is addicting if you like repetitive gameplay. Most of the quests are fetch quests or extermination quests, so if you ever played any other Ubisoft open world game, you will feel at home. The map for each planet is uncovered as you discover observatories or traverse the planet. They are not that big, nor that many (I think there are 7 different planets), but they are all the same with different colors in the end, so once you get on one, and do some activities and quests, the others are virtually the same.
The repetitive nature may be a plus or minus for you; that is something that depends from player to player. The game is rated for kids; so you can have your 10 year old kid play the game, and it will be just fine and accessible. There is digital violence of course, since you shoot at ships or monsters, but there is no blood or any other questionable content. I play it too and this means that if you are an adult, you can enjoy this game too.
Fundamentally, it is a space game for kids that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
I was surprised to see how good the game looks and play; and for just 35 dollars, you get like 40 hours or so, of gameplay, which can't be matched by any other game at this price range. Plus you get the spaceship toy; which is nicely made and looks well done. I would not say that is ideal for a kid, since the fins move and can break probably if dropped, but if you have kids that are 10+, probably they will love the toys too.
The game is very fun, challenging and entertaining. Graphics look great despite the hardware limitations on the Nintendo Switch. I do agree that the game gets a little repetitive from time to time, but the missions are satisfying and you do get exclusive content and missions for Star Fox. There’s lots of content and many things you can do on this game so you won’t get bored at all. For all of us fans of Star Fox and grew up playing the original ones, the game does not intend to be a full fledged Star Fox game, its mostly an idea for a possible full Star Fox game using some of the same type of graphical and gameplay mechanics Starlink offers. Star Fox is an excellent choice for this game. The other main characters featured in this game are lovable and fun to play with as well. I have played many hours and I do have to say that the quality and attention to detail, and the freedom of space exploration was very well executed by Ubisoft, despite the repetitive missions. This game is a combination of No Mans Sky, Galaxy on Fire for iOS, Zelda BOTW, Destiny, Skylanders, and other games combined but it is better made and put in to one.
As far as people hating it because of the toy collectibles and ‘cash grab’ remarks, This is mostly a kids game, kids like toys, kids know parents will pay for their toys period. Unfortunately there’s always a price tag for everything, it’s called business. You do not have to buy the physical toys to play this game. There is a cheaper option: buy the digital versions for all the contents of this game. I do like the idea of interacting with the physical toy and bringing it to life in-game. They are more expensive because kids can play with them as regular toys outside the game and as a grown man like me who enjoys the game a lot, they are great as original collectibles.
Overall the game is amazing but not perfect by any means, as a man who played the original Star Fox games, I love to see Star Fox content and the original characters in it. I think this is a great idea for a future Star Fox only game for the Nintendo Switch. If you don’t like the game and don’t support the idea of it, don’t buy it, but let others enjoy this gem without all the unjustified hatred. This game does deserve a good rating. It’s is fun and enjoyable for kids and adults of all ages. If you can swallow the prices for all the content and the toys/collectibles I do recommend it. It’s well worth it.
