Wolfhunter River (Stillhouse Lake Book 3) Kindle Edition
An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.
She can’t ignore a cry for help. But in this remote hunting town, it’s open season.
Gwen Proctor escaped her serial-killer husband and saved her family. What she can’t seem to outrun is his notoriety. Or the sick internet vigilantes still seeking to avenge his crimes. For Gwen, hiding isn’t an option. Not when her only mission is to create a normal life for her kids.
But now, a threatened woman has reached out. Marlene Crockett, from the remote town of Wolfhunter, is panicked for herself and her daughter. When Gwen arrives in the small, isolated rural community, Marlene is already dead—her own daughter blamed for the murder. Except that’s not the person Marlene feared at all. And Gwen isn’t leaving until she finds out who that was.
But it may already be too late. A trap has been set. And it’s poised to snap shut on everyone Gwen loves. Her stalkers are closing in. And in a town as dark as Wolfhunter, it’s so easy for them to hide…

On their arrival in Wolfhunter, Vee, fifteen years old, had already been arrested for her mother’s murder. Gwen could see that no one believed her – or better yet, they thought Vee could be the ‘fall guy’ for this murder. And when Sam and Connor found a body in the woods near the river, suddenly Sam was arrested as well, and Connor’s witness statement was being twisted to suit themselves. With a town full of rednecks and crooked cops out to remove Gwen and her family from existence, Gwen was in the fight for their lives. Could they survive? And what was it with Wolfhunter – remote, isolated, surrounded by bush – and its inhabitants?
Wolfhunter River is the 3rd in the Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine and I loved it! Intense, chilling, brutal and twisted, the pages race by with barely a let up! How much longer can this poor family keep on fighting, hiding and being harassed? Great characters with an extreme plotline, Wolfhunter River is one I highly recommend. I’m looking forward to #4 already!
And then... ??
Then it all got to be too much! There was a very honest and intense family blending and bonding scene that I found very moving. Maybe I was on overload from the intensity of that scene; I'm not sure what happened. To describe by example would create spoilers. Don't want to do that.
But the action and danger in the story picked up and just wouldn't stop! It became difficult to fathom or believe all that stuff could be endured physically and processed mentally/emotionally by mere human beings. New storylines were presented as "twists". The main characters seemed ridiculously forgiving towards the villains in their lives, and I started rolling my eyes and calling "Hokey!!" And "Corny!" I started having trouble keeping track of how the story was wrapping up--not sure if I understood what happened, and realizing I didn't really care. The story was no longer believable. I found contradictions and loose ends. Didn't care.
I feel like the story rates around 3.7 stars. I rounded up to 4 stars because the book was amazing up to about 70%. Maybe other readers will expect the story to take off into non-stop action, and will find fun escape in the super human feats of the characters.
Personally, I'm going to have to take a rest before I read another book in this series.
Sam’s background is explored a bit deeper in this book than the previous two, and we discover that he isn’t just the ‘wronged party’ as a brother of a victim. He was an active participant in the online stalkers determined to destroy Gwen, and one of the other group members comes to the fore here, angry at Sam’s ‘betrayal’ and willing to stop at nothing. She’s ultimately a distraction, though, from the real horrors here, as Gwen uncovers not just a dangerous cult but also a solo house of horrors where young women are serially abused.
Wolfhunter River is a really intriguing continuation of the series, marking something of a shift away from Gwen’s own personal issues to her solving other cases. Gwen’s past still colours everything, of course, it’s obvious she’ll never be free of it, but it also uniquely equips her to deal with cases that just won’t be solved any other way.
I don’t think you could step in here and read this book without having read the other two, as Gwen’s past drives too much of the events here. But if you haven’t read them, you’ve seriously missed out, so go back to the beginning, start with Stillhouse Lake… and enjoy.

Trigger Warnings: Murder, Violence, Kidnapping, Emotional Abuse & Hate Crime
It’s strange how excited I get for rereading this series, but I am now all up to date with what has happened in Gwen’s life so far. I still really enjoyed this book and is definitely a 5⭐️ still. I can’t wait to get stuck into book 4 to see how their story continues.
I am really liking how Rachel does the different POV’s it makes the story interesting, and gives us all an insight on what the other characters are feeling and going through.
I recommend this series, even if your not a crime/mystery person you will be after reading this series x

Each one better than the previous one.
Next to the 4th book.
Strongly recommended!

Besonders gruselig fand ich auch diesmal wieder den Internet-Lynchmob ... schon erschreckend real, wozu die (a)sozialen Medien fähig sind. Ich werde die Serie jedenfalls weiter lesen.
