Gameplay feels solid and smooth. Takes some minor tweaking on the sensitivity and button layout - once you find your preference, though, it just feels right. Personally prefer playing split joy-cons or with the joy-con grip over handheld due to the Switch's placement of the sticks - feels slightly uncomfortable to play handheld for very long, but it works if that's your preferred mode of play. Also, the two modes of Arcade style and Campaign offer a generous amount of replay value. I haven't played the multiplayer, but I'm sure it will only further add to the long-lasting appeal of this games life on the system.
Graphics have been slightly downgraded - really only noticeable when you slow down and examine the environments, weapons, and models closely. Let's be honest, though - you won't be slowing down very often in this game. So it works and, ultimately, the downgrade in visuals helps keep the frame rate smooth. I have noticed no stutters, slow down, etc.
Overall this game fits perfectly on the Switch's system; it's quick and easy pick-up-and-go gameplay works ridiculously well with the consoles portability factor. Not to mention, Doom fills a much needed FPS role for the system. It will surely satisfy the long gap in the genre at least until Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Metroid Prime 4 release for the system.
Whether you've played DOOM before or are a newcomer (like me), I believe that this specific port will be more than worth your time visiting (or revisiting). It looks good, feels great, and is a technical wonder that can only further bolster future AAA 3rd party support for the system for years to come.
Thanks Bethesda. And well done.
And I regret nothing. This game is awesome. I think no matter what system you get this for, you’re gonna have a great time. That said, I do recommend:
- don’t adjust the brightness when the game first prompts you to, it’s a trap. I set it so low based on the instructions that it was impossible to read the text. You can adjust the brightness later under the video option in the settings menu (it’s referred to as ‘gamma’).
- I prefer the motion blur on high (which is the default). I think it compensates for the degraded visuals. You’re mileage may vary, but I think it looks pretty darn good that way.
- I turned the horizontal and vertical sensitivity down a bit (settings > controller). Doomguy runs around like he’s on roller skates and I felt like this helped me play better.
Great single player campaign with lots of secrets to uncover and items/upgrades to unlock.
Multiplayer is really fun, competitive and it's super fast to load into a game and get playing.
The graphics are pretty awesome for the Switch - it's not a cartoon game or simple sprite side-scroller.. it's a full-on 3-d environment, scaled down from it's predecessors. I have not played Doom with higher resolution, so it really does not bother me knowing the graphics are "muted". Once you get into the game, it becomes really fun and engaging and you don't even pay attention to the graphics. The bad part about the graphics is that there is no field of view (FOV) adjustment which makes things look like you are playing on a 1:1 aspect ration instead of 3:4, or that things look a tad bit narrow. I hope that Bethesda Studios integrates more options to adjust the graphics beyond motion blur and chromatic aberation.
This game is great - I would recommend it.
