While it works, and looks nice doing it, I have a few problems. First and foremost, it can take a while to update. If I pull up the Control Center or Home app to get an overview of my home, or ask Siri, the Degree can take up to ten or fifteen seconds to show the information I want. Sometimes it's faster, but the "updating" text is usually what greets me. This is a fault of the bluetooth technology in use, I suspect. Were the Degree to use wifi, I imagine things would be much faster. Of course, I also imagine the battery life would plummet, which is why the company didn't do it. But that's just my guess.
Battery is my other complaint. Like some other reviewers, the battery in my Degree failed after only a few weeks of use, nothing like the year stated by the company. I found a replacement for $5 on Amazon and will install that once it arrives, hoping for better battery life. My only other complaint is that the temperature randomly switched to Celcius, which confused my family. I could change it in the app, but I hadn't done so when this happened. I don't know how it switched, but this happened around the time I started getting low battery warnings, so I'm not ready to call it a definite bug. Still, it's something to be aware of.
If you’re reading all the reviews that say the range is bad, I have no idea what they are talking about. Our Apple TV is our hub in our living room, and our Degree is outside our front door, at least 15ft away. No range issues at all.
The display for the Elgato device is not backlit, whereas the display for the iHome device is backlit, so it's easier to see in the dark. Also, you can see both the temperature and humidity, at the same time, on the screen for the iHome product. Lastly, the iHome product Wi-Fi base, so there is no issue seeing it from any other Homekit app anywhere in your home, as long as the Wi-Fi coverage is strong enough.
So, while the Elgato Eve Degree works, and the industrial design is solid, the iHome Smartmonitor gives more functionality at a fraction of the cost, but without the great industrial design. Unless you really need the air pressure sensor, and need to use it outside, the iHome Smartmonitor is the better choice for devices in this category.
1. If you use it outside beware it stops working around zero degrees. The battery will die and/or the unit will flat out stop responding. Useless for those in the north.
2. Whatever device is acting as your home hub for Homekit must be nearby. If you place it outside the home hub will need to be even closer. If you have a HomePod like I do, it *must* act as the Homekit hub, so be prepared to move it, potentially making it useless as well.
3. You can't set notifications based on temp or humidity.
4. I submitted two support cases to Eve weeks ago and still have not heard back. Bad support combined with a bad device = one star.
Suggest you look elsewhere until they get these issues fixed. Too bad, its a nice looking sensor.
