We had two other printers; one is a 10 or so year old HP Officejet Pro L7680 and the other is an Epson Workforce 635. Both are higher-end inkjet printers. The HP has been used to death over it's life and still prints just fine, although scanning and faxing is frustrating because the ADF often miss-feeds. The Epson printer was hardly ever used and then stopped printing black altogether when we tried to use it again. So, we decided to get a laser printer to replace the Epson and chose this one for our home office after much researching.
My first impression of this new printer is mind-blowing! Print quality is amazing. It is quiet and fast and has all the bells and whistles we could want (auto duplex, 2-sided scanning, large enough paper trays, etc.) All of this was pretty much expected from our researching, however, what we did not expect was how well and FAST it scans!! Our HP L7680 scans extremely slow over the network (I'm talking watching paint dry slow - at least a good minute or so per page). The M477fdn scanning is incredible; we had a 100-page document to scan and loaded the first 50 pages into the feeder and hit scan and watched as the page thumbnails started popping up every couple seconds and couldn't believe it. Less than two minutes and all pages were scanned; loaded the next 50 sheets and clicked to add pages and done and saved to PDF in short order! We are blown away by the speed of this thing and how well it handles large jobs.
Love the touchscreen interface also and the easy of navigating and selecting options. It feels pretty much like using a tablet and works very well.
One thing I did find annoying is that the instructions on how to open the box were inside the box! The carton has these plastic 'clips' at the bottom of each side that you open and remove and then the entire top of the box can be lifted off. However, they don't tell you this until you open the box and find a sheet of paper inside with these instructions. So, I had cut the tape and opened the flaps the normal way only to find there was a better and easier way, which also makes it much easier to remove the printer.
Time will tell on durability and performance over time, however, at this point we give this a solid 5 stars. Will update if anything changes.
Unpacking this MFP and setting up the hardware could not be easier. After taking the printer from the shipping carton, remove pieces of packing tape from a few plastic panels and the screen protector, attach the power and network cables, add paper and you're ready to go. There isn't any need to pull out the toner cartridge drawer or even remove protective strips from the 4 toner cartridges. However, as others have cautioned in the reviews here (and elsewhere for the fnw and fdw variants), there is a plastic strip affixed to the far left side of the scanning glass that must not be removed. Software installation is a snap using the Easy Start utility available as a download from the HP website. It took around 30 minutes to install this MFP for three Apple iMacs (running OS X 10.11 and higher), including the download time for the drivers and associated utilities. (I really don't understand why others have mentioned that the software installation is problematic.)
This MFP unit weighs in at a somewhat hefty 51.2 lb, although it is reasonably compact (16.4 in. W x 18.6 in. D x 15.7 in. H) for its print / copy / scan / fax / email functionality. The rated engine speed (28 ppm letter size, black and color) seems accurate, as does the first page out (ready) times: 8.9 seconds for black and 9.8 seconds for color, although it does seem to be much faster. Print quality is extremely good for both text and graphics (black and color), as is output from the scanner. Noise levels are very low when operating, whisper-quiet when in standby (ready) mode, and absolutely silent when the machine enters the sleep state. The 4.3 in. touchscreen color graphic display (CGD) is intuitive and easy to use; no user manual required.
The printer settings may also be changed via the embedded web server utility (See first two photos below.), as an alternative to using the printer CGD. What's really nice is that this utility allows you to configure other items not available in the control panel, such as the color calibration timing intervals and power-on calibration (including disabling this if desired). On the other hand, the embedded web server lacks other advanced features as for higher-end HP color lasers, such as the LaserJet Enterprise 500 Series printers. Some examples: (1) User access is unrestricted as there is no password protection, and (2) There isn't a setting to restrict color output (i.e. for some computer applications and/or by user or group permissions).
A word of caution... be sure to enter the primary and secondary DNS addresses (IPv4) if you configure the M477fdn manually with a static IP address. Otherwise, the machine will not be able to access the Internet and the HP ePrint feature will not be available.
Please refer to other photos for overall view, control panel, pull down Tray 1 and toner cartridge / drawer assembly.
You can't go wrong with this HP MFP model, since it has just about everything (except native 802.11 WiFi capability). Highly recommended.
