It does, however, require a LOT of light. We live in Florida - in full sun, outside, it worked. But it stopped walking as soon as a cloud floated by. So it really does need a TON of light. We tried a flashlight, lamp the window - nope, had to be outside in full sun. And, it fell over a lot, but that didn't bother me because my son was then interested in how he could add legos or penny's to balance it out so it didn't fall, so that was learning. Overall, I'd buy it again - he enjoyed it. Just know the issues.
Make sure to have a small Phillips head screwdriver for assembly. There are 5 small screws in total that we used (there was a 6th but didn't need to use it). Also, the wheels are a little hard to put on and may benefit from some cement to keep them on.
The kit comes with a plastic 'body' as well if you're not interested in using an aluminum can. I didn't know that when I ordered, it was a nice add-in I thought.
The build was really easy and my 8 year old was able to do about half. She covered the top in Lisa Frank stickers -- yep you can decorate it!
The only part that frustrated us was that it said to put on the can and the plastic cover - or at least that's how we read it. You only attach one of the two.
